Exquisite lamps & lighting

Inspired by nature, hand made in England

Located in Somerset, Temple & Ivy has created a world class range of interior lighting

Designers Nicky Boulton and Susan Neville are redefining exquisite lamps and lighting, with their unique manufacturing business.

Temple & Ivy's design inspiration was born of childhood summers in Zimbabwe and a recent Kenyan safari. Distinct and exclusive, these individually handcrafted lamps are a creative way to animate spaces and inject personality into interior schemes. Sculpted and forged in Somerset using traditional cold cast bronze resin and carbon fibre they are a beautiful example of design innovation: blending classic and contemporary influences.  The shades represent the birds that have been selected for the range and beautifully hand made, including: Avocets, Flamingos, African Jacana, African Rail, Purple Gallinule. Some of the shades are exquisitely feathered, others feature beautiful Maasai beads and can be custom made to suit a client's colour scheme.

The unique range is cast in bronze and carbon fibre to give the legs great strength, adopting a specialist technique for layering each of the finishes chosen. A further layer of bronze is added for a bronze finish, or a layer of copper for copper verdigris or metal alloy to give a pewter finish.

All products are handmade in England.  Our lighting complies with the safety requirements for UK, Europe and the USA.

In addition to retail sales, we maintain partnerships with interior designers and boutique hotel chains for the supply of product. Please contact us with any domestic or commercial enquiries. We ship worldwide.

Unique, design classics

Temple & Ivy create beautiful interior lighting, combining traditional sculpture with modern materials and the rich textures and flamboyance of the natural world. These made to order lamps are statement pieces for creating unique interiors.

Founders and business partners Nicky and Susan spent several months in Kenya and Zimbabwe, photographing and tracking birds to then curate their range of products. Travelling through Africa with a great friend and BBC Wildlife programme maker with a passion for ornithology, they stayed in the Mara before travelling to Kilifi, by the ocean, striking up a partnership with the Maasai co-operative.

A collaboration with the Maasai co-operative

In Kilifi the team met with a design co-operative making handbags, shoes, wallets and a variety of goods from local leather and decorated with Maasai beading. This co-operative now make their Maasai beaded lampshades and is the first of its kind.

Inspired by Georgian Britain

Temple & Ivy sculptor, Neil R Mason recently won the David Shepherd Wildlife Award for Sculpture. The team established how the Georgians used feet on all kinds of household furniture including candelabras and discovered how surrealists explored the use of legs and feet on tables and chairs. This has become an intrinsic design feature on all products in the range.

Within their design collection, the design team have retained a collection of inspiring, historic ornithology books with exquisite drawings of African birds. The design team frequently travel to Portugal to visit the lakes and sea where wading birds, including flamingoes, come and go throughout the year, to help refine the detailed features of their range.

Keen to sculpt long legs from the flamingo and delighted by the complexity of the 'Lily Trotting' feet of the Jacana, the designers ensure that the legs are as life like as possible, Using Neil's talent for capturing the movement of a bird and the foundry's expertise interpreting it, the legs have the appearance of a freely walking range that is not grounded by a base.

The result?  A truly inspiring range, like no other.
